Psychodynamic approach - developed by freud; personality formed by needs, strivings, desires operating outside of awareness -- motives also produce emotional disorders. Most mental processes not available to conscious consideration. Conscious level: thoughts we are aware of. Preconscious level: thoughts we aren"t aware of but can be brought to awareness. Unconscious level: material that mind cannot easily retrieve and bring to awareness. Hidden memories, wishes, desires, motives are kept inaccessible to prevent conflict and distress. Mind consists of 3 independent, interacting, conflicting systems to determine personality structure: Id - contains drives for bodily needs, wants, desires, impulses -- sex and aggression drives. Superego - mental system reflecting internalization of cultural rules from authority or parents. Ego - developed through contact with external world that enables to deal with life"s practical demands.
