NUTR SCI 132 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Nutrient Density
Document Summary
There is not a single level of nutrients that you need to survive, it"s a broad range that varies from individual to individual. Nutrient levels are measured on a bell curve based on concentration. The levels of nutrient intake go from fatal , at too low of levels, to deficient , marginal , optimal , marginal , toxic , and again. A specific essential chemical that plays a vital role in our lives. We can"t synthesize (make) it in the human body so we rely on the food we eat to get the nutrients we need. The rda or recommended dietary intake is a similar curve, but is the recommended nutrient intake average for americans, not just one individual. *keep in mind, nutrient intakes are not the same for everyone -- the recommended intake amount varies extremely from person to person. Nutrient density (a comparison of nutrients to calories) High nutrient density = mostly nutrients, low in calories.
