MICROBIO 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Cyanobacteria, Phototaxis, Clostridium
Document Summary
Lab lecture notes for period 9 (water analysis: general plate count and. One of the important concepts of this experiment is the concept of indicator organisms. We are testing for some indication of soil or fecal pollution which would be of concern in water used for drinking, swimming, bathing and washing stuff. These gram-negative, lactose-fermenting (showing visible gas) organisms are called coliforms. This is not a taxonomic group that is, there is nothing like a coliform genus or family in the classification of bacteria. (note the special handout on coliforms. ) This medium is fairly selective for gram-negative bacteria, and lactose is included as the only fermentable sugar. Therefore, if there are coliforms included in what we are inoculating from the water sample into the tubes of lltb, we will see not only growth but also gas in the durham tube.
