Book 9: and my fame reaches even to heaven (odysseus) We meet important characters who help define odysseus"s character. Eumaeus, pig herder, hosts odysseus in his hut (xenia) He"s a nanny/servant (a lower class person). this is unusual in an epic, and these humble people turn out to be faithful friends. Opposed to suitors who are actually evil. Also eurycleia, who washes his feet/offers him a bath. Odysseus threatened by the loss of his nostos or his return home. Often, he"s tempted to surrender his nostos, forget his old self, start a new life, or die. Episode with the lotus-eaters, nausicaa, after he leaves calypso and nearly dies. He responds with terror to being absolutely alone after escaping from the island.
