Pressure increases as you get deeper into the earth. *prograde metamorphism - increasing in pressure and temperature. *retrograde metamorphism - decreasing in pressure and temperature. *6 types of metamorphism: shock - when an object hits the earth (i. e asteroid, regional, contact, metasomatism (seafloor) - changes igneous rock to metamorphic, burial, dynamic - faults. *two ways to break rock: fracture and folding* *stress : the pressure on the rock, force put on a particular area: confining pressure, directed pressure. Ex. when you"re in a pool and go deeper your ears hurt because there"s more pressure. -as you go from undeformed to high confining pressure, you increase depth in earth. Exam question: brittle fracture of rocks is mostly likely to occur where in the earth, in the core, in the mantle, deep crust, shallow crust. Imagine you want to tell someone the direction of your front door.
