ED PSYCH 320 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Dwarfism, Stunted Growth, Vaccination Schedule
Document Summary
Physical development: physical development is the process that starts in human infancy and continues into late adolescent concentrating on gross and fine motor skills as well as puberty. Physical development involves developing control over the body, particularly muscles and physical coordination. The peak of physical development happens in childhood and is therefore a crucial time for neurological brain development and body coordination to encourage specific activities such as grasping, writing, crawling, and walking. Children add 2 to 3 inches in height and about 5 pounds in weight each year in early childhood. Children gradually lose baby fat , and boys continue to be slightly larger than girls. Individual differences in body size are more apparent during early childhood than in infancy and toddlerhood. Variations in body size indicate that growth norms from one population are not good standards for children elsewhere in the world. Must be taken into account when assessing a child"s growth.
