Southern part of the netherlands was referred to flanders; made up declining spanish empire. Sharp divide bc flanders was catholic and netherlands were protestant: peter paul rubens, self-portrait with isabella brandt, 1609-10. Great in bringing together many aspects of italian art in a dramatic, colorful way with twisting figures. Was an aristocrat and educated, diplomat and became court painter and had connections with important political powers. Piece depicts rubens and his wife, isabella. Put in very elegant clothes and looking out to the viewer; showing off wealth and power; not as a painter: peter paul rubens, elevation of the cross, from saint walburga, antwerp. Restoration of altarpieces; scene is catholic in nature (also a triptych) to refer back to. Depicts christ about to be raised actively to the cross; christ depicted very muscularly and putting up a fight; extends across all panels.
