Race is a concept which signiies and symbolizes social conlicts and interests by referring to diferent types of human bodies (omi and winant, racial formaions in the united states, p. 55) Reverse racism - does not truly exist: whites have the dominant power structure through the world. Race: emphasis on common physical appearance; oten imposed; intersect w/ gender and class. Both race and ethnicity: socially constructed; relaional (compare to other groups) Race and ethnicity are not completely discrete ideas: ex: african american can be seen as a race and a culture. The middle class: own their own house, enough money to live comfortably, aford to buy good food, support their children, some leisure ime (for vacaions, etc. ) Class isn"t just about income- it"s a way of living life & thinking about yourself and others: afects the way people see us and how you see them.
