In a parliamentary system, the united states might see a five-party field with the left dominating in general, but huge support on the wings of each side: predicted based on the economist"s projections using 2016 presidential voting data. & are people encouraged to vote honestly: the institutional rules of voting have a large effect on the election outcome. Influences how we view the choices we have: single-member districts with plurality voting produce two party systems. Voter psychology prevents voting for third parties because of fear that a spoiler vote will throw the election (1) people need to believe that someone can win in order to vote for them (a) creates a self-reinforcing system. Single-member districts with winner take all systems lead to only one party getting represented and no others in each district: problems in the electoral college mirror duverger"s law.
