Document Summary

Compares two body parts distance to the body"s core. Respiratory system is responsible for taking in oxygen and eliminating waste gases like carbon dioxide: thorax: the chest cavity, with the following components: Pleura: each pair of membranes lining the thorax and enveloping the lungs (1) visceral pleura covers surface of the lungs (2) parietal pleura covers inside of the thorax, mediastinum and the diaphragm. Pleural fluid: liquid located between layers of the pleura. Mediastinum: lies within the thorax and is enclosed by the pleura, containing all organs of the thorax except for the lungs. Lungs lie on either side of the mediastinum and are each surrounded by a pleural cavity: dogs do not sweat through their skin, so the respiratory system is crucial for regulating body temperature. External respiration: exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide that takes place between air inhaled and the lungs.
