My idea of a sustainable community is one where the members, all species and populations live in harmony with each other and with the environment. Unequal distribution of environmental burdens and benefits based on patterns of race, socioeconomic class, and ethnicity. Direct relationship between distance from community to hazardous waste site and/or landfill and race and/or socioeconomic class community. As distance to landfill and/or hazardous waste sites decreases, the percentage of community that is of color or low socioeconomic status increases. Living near a landfill or hazardous waste site can lead to many health problems such as asthma and other issues. Medical costs of community increase as distance to a landfill or hazardous waste site decrease. 16% of people in the us live with 5km of a hazardous waste site. Life expectancy of us citizens can be estimated based on zip code, where you live.
