About how long does it take to form an inch of topsoil (most productive layer): ~500 years, not sustainable. Soil: a hidden resource: 1 in 9 (860 million) people across world are food insecure, ~25-70% production increase needed with increasing population (10 billion by 2050, need soil to do this. Soil orders: some soils better for growing food than others. Midwest us- mollisols- good, productive soil: a bad soil region is also a food insecure region, correlation between soil quality and food insecurity. Rill and gully erosion: wind erosion. Subsidence of organic soils: this kind of mismanagement has e ected us before, and it can happen again. Soil degradation globally: about every region in some way is e ected by soil degradation (physical, chemical, etc. ) Usage of machinery: overexploitation for domestic use. Cooking with charcoal- burning vegetation on land: industrial pollution. Predicted soil loss: can identify particular regions. What can be done to protect soil: improved crop management.
