Universal family functions: procreation and care of children, socialization of children, organization of kinship relations, regulation of adult sexuality. Why we need institutions order and functions: brigitte berger, need some common, legitimate practices in other words, order so we know what to do in family life. Norms for mothers: these practices and the roles associated with the family allow us to fulfill important social functions. Liberal and conservative views: have different views on recent family change. Family ideologies: ultimate and derivative beliefs, liberal ultimate beliefs. Family changing, not declining: conservative ultimate beliefs. Family process vs. family structure: liberals: process (quality of relationships) most important. Family process depends on social structure (esp. economics) more than family structure: conservatives: structure (intact married vs. single/step) most important. Family structure and culture strongly influence family process. Our ultimate beliefs shape our derivative beliefs. Values shape the kinds of facts we stress. Adults and children in family should not be constrained by too many norms.
