Ataturk wanted separation between religion and state: said you could be a citizen without being a muslim, no need to persecute minority faiths, freedom of conscience- diversity, religious diversity. Decouple older islamic ways: banned the wearing of the fez, discouraged women from wearing the hijab, however not banned, launched reform to give women equal rights. Women had equal rights in divorce, custody, and inheritance. Changed calendar and replaced islamic calendar with western calendar.
