Vatican ii- international gathering of catholic leaders, chiefly bishops from all around the world to articulate standards for catholics worldwide. 1870 vatican i happened 92 years before vatican ii: liberal christianity, nationalism. Vatican i reassert importance of church: articulate papal infallibility, vatican i shrouded in secrecy, no press leaks etc, did not do a lot. 1962-65 vatican ii, 4 years, met every fall of those years. Presided over vy 2 different popes, at one point there were 3 vying against each other. Vatican ii considered an eccumenable counsel: when chief authorities gather to discuss with a church authority. 4th lateran council (1215) articulated the doctrine of transubstantiation. Is a pope more powerful or not if their decisions are with a council. Vatican i not the case, vatican ii wasn"t dismissed. 3 goals: clarify thinking among catholics, strengthen the bond with non catholics.
