Emergence of 2 distinct forms of judaism: reform and conservative judaism, now either reform, conservative, orthodox, or reconstructive. Hebrew commentary on moral and literary beauty of the bible. Haskalah: jewish enlightenment, revolved in project bringing jews into modern life, haskalah- refers to the jewish enlightenment, more specifically- phase of writing of hebrew literature, writing poems, plays essays, more than a change in literary fashion. Called for reform of jewish education, less concentration on study but more on what is exercised. Form jews who will embody a synthesis universal humanitarianism. Socioeconomic factors: b/c of growth and spread of laissez faire, industrial revolution, emancipation of jews from french revolution, jews could get citizenship, jews developing more in cities, where economics were expanding. Lots of middle class jews: worked in shops + professional jobs like doctors, journalist etc. Question: how do i live as a faithful jew.
