What are the distinctive views of religious fundamentalists? (emerson, hartman) In contrast to modernity - reacting against trends - Against pluralism; against social behaviors -- strengthening of absolutism, increase in seeing group as superior. It"s possible for people to create a new view and claim it was something done in the past. An interesting issue -- something to consider. Dualistic world view: dividing the world up into good and evil, Absolutism: understanding of religion is based on an interpretation. Millennialism and messianism - history has a miraculous ultimate end. Generally patrimonial both as a whole and on smaller, familial units - specific gender roles. The members of fundamentalist movements view themselves as people who have been selected to defend the purity of their religion. Sharp boundaries: you either accept it as pure or you don"t. Authoritarian organization led by a charismatic leader and often a vanguard. Parochial focus -- therefore perhaps more variation.
