BIOL 2100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Monomer, Polysaccharide, Dna Replication

12 views2 pages

Document Summary

Early biologists thought that genes were proteins instead of dna. Possibly because proteins are much more diverse than nucleic acids. One was very malignant and another was benign. The rough bacteria were not virulent, while the smooth one was. The smooth bacteria have the ability to form a polysaccharide capsule around themselves. Protects them from phagocytosis by white blood cells. Antibodies mark the bacteria like a handle, allowing the blood cells to recognize the capsules. When injecting mice with non-virulent bacteria and with dead virulent bacteria, the mice died. Something from the dead cells was transferred to the living cells. After removing proteins in one case, ribonucleotides in another case, and dna in another case, only the experiment lacking dna did not result in transformation. Hershey and chase labeled viruses with radioactive isotopes. Radioactive sulfur results in radioactive amino acid. Rna is found in the nucleus and in the cytoplasm. Dna replication occurs during s phase to make another cell.
