Document Summary

2 lecture: 1820s to 1920s about 40,000,000 europeans immigrated to the us from europe. This was because the us had an abundance in available labor positions while many of the europeans home countries did not. Old wave of immigration (1820s) - - northern western europe. New wave of immigration (1880s) - - southern eastern europe. Both groups experienced very different reactions to their entry in the us. Very similar to dominant group in us. Those nations were also more developed nations that were more educated. Rejected by dominant group because they were more different than they were similar. The us sentiment towards a group in any present moment was paved by ethnic groups who succeeded one another . Resistance towards any one group would fade as a new group emerged. Most white people today do not self identify as other thing other than white. Most groups have completely integrated into society.
