Not a cohesive theory like the ones we talked about in ch 6. Accept piaget"s stages development at different rate in different domains. Suggest change within each stage due to increases in working-memory capacity. Overlapping waves pattern strategy when facing a problem or task children try variety of strategies. They observe how well they work, and gradually select those leading to rapid, accurate answers. Internal (thoughts, like having something annoying happen) and external (distractions, like hearing a car crash) Children lack inhibition, like kicking a friend without knowing why. Gains on complex tasks from middle childhood to adolescence. A lot of complex things happen between memory and inhibition between 3 and 7. Emerge and refined during four phases: production deficiency, control deficiency, utilization deficiency, effective strategy use. Begins in infancy and improves with age (preschoolers sometimes follow simple plans and school-age children are better than preschoolers) Tools, teaching, and practice help children learn to plan.
