We are predisposed to forming intimate interpersonal networks that are only so large. Need-to-belong theory and biologically based need for interpersonal connections. Need-to-belong idea that we seek out social bonds when we can and when we can find these bond we suffer psychologically and physically. It literally hurts us to be isolated or rejected. Most social influences processes are adaptive under most circumstances, but turn maladaptive when blind or unquestioning. We seek to evaluate our abilities and belief by comparing them with those of others. Upward (superior to you to motivate you ) and downward(inferior to you to make you feel better) social comparison. Social contagion is just the idea of social influence, ex mass hysteria collective delusions.
