Document Summary

The many environments of prokaryotes and the eukaryotic explosion. Many are extremophiles: hyperthermophiles, methanogens, halophiles. Microorganisms can be classified by their growth temperature: pyschrophiles, mesophiles, thermophiles, hyperthermophiles. All of these organisms have membranes and proteins best suited for their temperatures. Strict aerobes- can only grow in oxygen. Strict anaerobes- die in the least bit of oxygen. Facultative anaerobes- can live with or without oxygen: they possess both the ability for fermentative metabolism and respiration (anaerobic and aerobic) If a microorganism does not have catalase, what might that tell you about its environment relative to oxygen conditions. If you do(cid:374)"t live i(cid:374) a(cid:374) e(cid:374)viro(cid:374)(cid:373)e(cid:374)t that (cid:374)eeds (cid:272)atalase the(cid:374) there is (cid:374)o (cid:374)eed to have it. Some bacteria are highly resistant to extreme environmental threats. Deinococcus radiodurans: ni(cid:272)k(cid:374)a(cid:373)ed (cid:862)co(cid:374)a(cid:374) the (cid:271)a(cid:272)teriu(cid:373)(cid:863, has the greatest ability to survive radiation of any known organism, has exceptional capabilities for repairing dna damaged by radiation, genetically engineered for use in bioremediation.
