Lateral gene flow occurs by three different mechanisms. Slide 46- during transformation dna from a donor cell is taken up from another recipient cell. Slide 47- during transduction dna is transferred by a phage, meaning that a virus carries the dna from a donor bacteria to a recipient bacteria. Slide 48- during conjugation dna is transferred by cell- cell contact through pili. The ability to resist the effects of an antimicrobial agent. Resistance occurs because drug resistant genes in certain microorganisms are spread by lateral gene flow to other microorganisms. Slide 50- initially s aureus was only 3% resistant to penicillin g, it is now 90% resistant. Now it is basically immune to penicillin g (natural form of penicillin) so they created methicillin and vancomycin.
