CE 5310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Eikonal Equation, Johann Radon, Nondestructive Testing
Document Summary
In this section, image reconstruction is discussed based on wave phenomenon we have studied so far. Although the characteristics of wave propagation have a close relationship to material properties, it is sometimes difficult to illustrate the material characteristics with conventional graphs or tables. Imaging is one of the solutions to the problem. The definition of tomography is a technique for displaying a representation of a cross section through a human body or other solid object [oxford dictionaries]. The origin of tomography is from the combination of tomos as a meaning of section from greek word and graphy . Since this terminology has been used with the specific purpose of medical imaging, tomography is usually known as an imaging algorithm based on transmitted wave, especially when using x ray. These days, the terminology is widely used in various fields such as non destructive tests with the development of sensing and measurement.
