PSY-200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Nutrition And Pregnancy, Prenatal Development, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
Document Summary
Germinal stage= first two weeks post conception: conception to 2 weeks= implantation, zygote= fertilized egg, single cell, blastocyst- multicellular, primarily in the fallopian tube, 30-50% pregnancies end in this germinal stage unknowingly. Embryonic stage= embryo, 2 weeks to 8 weeks: formations of rudiments of major organs, highly susceptible to structural defects. Fetal stage- fetus 8 weeks all the way through birth: bone cells form, highly susceptible to functional defects. Neural migration - the movement of neurons from one part of the fetal brain to their permanent destination, occurs during months 3-5, toxins and viruses interfere with normal neural migration. Prenatal programming: experiences in the womb that can alter development: maternal nutrition, teratogens: substances that can interfe4re with development, cause birth defects, viruses (measles and flu) early in pregnancy, prescription drugs like antidepressants, alcohol (fasd), nicotine, radiation. Temperament- biologically-based tendency to behave in certain ways, influenced staring at fetal stage @ 36 weeks, impacts later personality, stress during pregnancy=fussy baby.
