SOC 4369 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Epstein–Barr Virus, Nasopharynx Cancer, Smoking Cessation
Document Summary
Different types of cancer grow at different rates. Need to study each specific type of cancer separately. Genetic susceptibility, lifestyle choices, environmental exposures, dietary factors, obesity. Physical activity, age, chronic inflammation, hormones, radiation, uv light, infectious agent. 30-40% of cancers can be prevented by healthy diet, healthy weight, and physical activity. 30% of cancers can be prevented by tobacco cessation. Diet does play a role in cancer etiology. Some foods may contain carcinogens and some may contain protective components. An estimated 10-20% of cancers are associated with infections. Epstein barr virus: nasopharyngeal cancer and non-hodgkin"s. Hpv: cancers of the cervix, vulva, and penis, anal cancer, and oropharyngeal cancers. Endogenous and exogenous hormones drive cell proliferation in hormone- related cancers. Higher risk in women who use hrt. Excess incidence of brain tumors in males. Over 170,000 cancers could be prevented by smoking cessation. More than of new cancers can be prevented or detected earlier by screening.
