Summary: theatre is a metaphor for understanding life through which the identity is performed through roles and there is a consensus between the actor and the audience. Dramaturgical analysis = director studying social interaction in terms of theatrical performance the self is a dramatic effect emerging from the immediate scene (dependent on time and place) Front = defines the situation for the audience involving standard elements of social performance (stereotype: you don"t create it, but you choose how to portray it, three characteristics are setting, manner and appearance. Setting = scenery, props (shapes how others see things) Appearance = portrayal of social status and what we look like (age, gender, race, clothing, etc. ) Manner = how we play our roles (personality: appearance and manner are congruent. Impression management = attempt to control what others thing of us, or try to change the setting, appearance or manner. Result = make the audience believe the performance is real.
