Early technologies (precursors to cinema: thaumatrope (1825) - illusions, precursor to cinema, key optical toys (ex. Eadward muybridge - prominent photographer, convicted murderer, eccentric: unconsciously created motion pictures. >>> muybridge"s 1877 test - bet on horse leads to capturing movement by placing cameras at certain spots and timing them to go off; pictures when played consecutively, showed motion. Etienne-jules marey - scientist: experiments w/ sequential photography for science, uses film-gun camera to capture movement. Thomas edison - inventor, scientist: brings down muybridge and marey and expands on ideas. George eastman kodak: dev. celluloid based film, formed patent trust w/ edison. *before wwi, french co. pathe sent reps to sell films and equipment. *movies were shown in fairs by travelling showmen, store fronts. >> nickelodeons - first movie-like theater: cheap, converted store fronts, showed cinema of attractions , includes genres:scenics (travelogues), topicals, gags, commercials >> ends up in vaudeville.
