Interpretations (one of the hardest - need good perspective taking) Used in many stages: assessment, treatment phase, figuring out goals . Exception: emergency room assessment - fast, rapid-fire. Not to fill silence or when at a loss for words. Ask only when have particular purpose in mind. Know why you"re asking the question & think about what kind of answer you"ll receive and whether that answer will propel the ongoing conversation in a way you want it to be. Open questions = go questions - can answer using a wide range of answers (free-response questions - pull for large pool of possible responses) Want them to fill up the air-space with spontaneous verbal output that allows you to respond in various ways (to produce the therapeutic outcome you"re looking to do) Invite, reinforce, train" expectation to speak a lot. Closed question - slow questions - has finite number of answers (pulling for not much variety - mc, t/f, y/n)
