Predictive toxicology - asses risks associated with a situation in which the toxic agent, subject and exposure conditions are defined. Saves pharmaceutical industry $ if toxic effects of a novel compound are caught early in drug development. Many compounds tested for toxicity on animals. Find threshold dose where you start to see toxic effect. Detect w/ greater sensitivity the effects of compounds. 1974 - acceptable blood level for lead - 40 g/dl. 1970s - described fetal alcohol syndrome for the first time. Later noticed more effects of prenatal alcohol. Later one - more careful study more subtly toxicological issues are discovered. With better detection appears like incidents are increasing over time. Common occurrence (> 2 million cases per year) Treated at some sort of health care facility.
