GOV 312L Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Nuclear Proliferation
Document Summary
Pull back: the case for a less activist foreign policy. Republicans and democrats quibble (they object) over foreign policy but agree that. America should dominate the world militarily, economically, and politically. The country needs to preserve the massive lead in global balance of power. Persian gulf consumes at least 15% of the us defense budget. Us has consistently spent hundreds of billions of dollars per year on its military, more than the sum of its friends and adversaries. (2013) roughly 180,000 us soldiers remained in foreign soil. This undisciplined, expensive, and bloody strategy makes enemies as fast as it slays them and convinces powerful states to oppose washington"s plan. Over the last decade this country"s relative power has deteriorated, and policymakers have made dreadful choices about which wars to fight and how to fight them. It is time for the us to change strategy and replace it with one of restraint.
