GOV 312L Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Divided Government
Document Summary
Gov discussion questions: public opinion surveys in the united states frequently cite terrorism and/or defending against future terrorist attacks as the most pressing policy problem facing the government of the united states. Ever since 9/11, the number of terrorist attacks in the us has exponentially increased; not just by terrorist groups from the middle east, but from american citizens as well. The increase in spending on domestic homeland security since 9/11 has totaled over one trillion dollars, not including the efforts to eliminate terrorists abroad. However, these crazy expenditures have still failed to make us citizens feel safer. I agree that safeguarding democratic states against terrorism entails sacrificing certain individual rights and liberties, especially in an age where terrorism in the us is prominent. It is hard for democratic states to ever achieve a perfect balance because of its wide range of polarization, but a reform on gun control definitely is a start.
