Deaf people live and function in a very different way. Being a foreigner in your own land. Ex. going somewhere and trying to ask directions but you can"t communicate with anyone. The little girl writes back no , moral of the story they had to adapt. The bus station episode: the professor"s deaf father walks up to buy a train ticket, the deaf father says he can read lips, but the ticket clerk writes on paper anyways. Even though the father could understand lip reading he had to deal with the ticket clerk assuming he had to write down words for the father to understand. The professor when he was young would stay up late with his brother and sisters and be so loud the neighbors would be upset, but his parents were deaf so they couldn"t hear. Best way to stop an argument with a deaf person? close your eyes.
