Managing rumors: anxiety both situational and personality, ambiguity rumors that search for meaning and make you feel more secure reduce ambiguity to confirm rumors. Gossip: why gossip, fun and interesting, status i know something you don"t know , hurt & revenge (reputational warfare, propaganda, record keeping. Makes you aware of the timeline happening around you/events/people: control, relational maintenance solidarity/similarity socializing newcomers, protect others & holding others accountable. A way of learning who you can trust and rely on. Put out a piece of gossip to see how people respond: involving/interesting, measure of integration intimacy, confidence, in-group. Holds friendships together because everyone wants to keep up with what"s going on: short-lived.
