Assumptions and values
-Values are embedded in human behavior, language, etc.
-Tjelveit offered suggestions for minimizing the possibility of counselors acting in ways that might be
insensitive to their clients values.
1. Become informed about the variety of values in society.
2. Be aware of your own values
3. Present value options to clients in an unbiased manner.
4. Be committed to the clients freedom of choice.
5. Respect clients with the values that differ from your own.
6. Consult with others when necessary.
7. Consider referring clients to another counselor when substantial moral, religious, or political
value differences exist.
Why a career in professional counseling?
Without understanding our own issues, we cannot be an effective counselor.
-Potential motivators:
1. Some people want to make a difference in this world, they are altruistic.
2. Some people have a need to take care of others., they need to be needed.
3. Some people see themselves as problem solvers, they believe they are good listeners and advice
givers.
4. Some people have made a career shift from another profession.
5. Some people have been in counseling themselves and want to become counselors as a result.
6. Some counselors want positions of status and influence; they have a need for power and control
that they believe can be met by helping others.
7. Some people believe that they can make high-paying incomes.
8. Some people have problems that they need addressed.
How well do you know yourself?
-You may have multiple motivators. They can change over time.
