Four stages of creative thought wallas. The problem solver gathers info and does some work on the problem, but with little progress. The problem solver sets the problem aside and seems not to be working on it. Continues to work on the problem unconsciously during this stage. A key insight or new idea emerges. The person confirms that the new idea really does lead to a solution and works out the details. Historical evidence moment of illumination may be more myth than reality. New ideas emerge from a succession of mini-insights , each moving the process forward. Gave participants a series of insight problems . Rated their progress as they worked on each problem i"m getting warmer Before they found a solution, gave ratings of 1 or 2. When they found a solution, ratings went to the top of the scale. Pattern is the same for both those who announced the correct and incorrect solution.
