BIOL 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: External Beam Radiotherapy, Hydrocephalus, Thyroid
Document Summary
Procedures and techniques of radiology and diagnostic imaging. Delivery of ionizing radiation to accomplish one or more of the following. To slow or stop the spread of cancer cells. Destroys rapidly multiplying cells regardless of whether they are cancerous. Goal is to reach maximum tumor control with no, or minimal, normal tissue damage. May be delivered by teletherapy (external), brachytherapy (internal radiation), combination of both. Examination that determines the position, size, shape, and physiological function of the thyroid gland through the use of radionuclear scanning. Image of the thyroid is recorded and visualized after a radioactive substance is given. Recording of the emission of radioactive waves after the introduction of radionuclide tracer. Uses a gamma camera to record the concentration of radioactive substance. Radioactivity is completely eliminated from the body within 2 days of the procedure. Involves the intravenous injection of a radionuclide material absorbed by the bone tissue.
