BIOL 118 Lecture Notes - Lecture 33: Smallpox, Hemagglutinin, Hydrophile
Document Summary
Be able to compare to small pox (variola major) Has a segmented rna genome (unlike variola major---no dna) Symptoms last for ab 7 days then immune system kicks in. Avg death rate ab 1% (depends on strain of flu) Greatest single medical disaster in human history. Unlike other strains this strain appeared to kill off younger stronger adults than younger or older ppl (exact opposite effect) Know structures & be able to describe what each part does & 8 separate pieces of rna in every virus* Hemagglutinin (yellow cone on surface of virus) Binds to host cell to gain entry (viral receptor*) Important when new virus buds out of host cell, allows the virus to break away & infect another host cell. Can infect birds & jump into humans (all domesticated birds--allows ample opportunities) Tends to be ones that causes big pandemics. Some forms that can only produce in humans & or other mammals.
