Large number: begins to secrete compounds: exopolysaccharides (similar to slime capsule) Long strands of sugar making it outside the cell matrix. Makes huge amts so large populations can live inside it. Allows it to stay attached in an environmnent when there are large currents. Has pores that allows water to flow through.
