PSYC 301L Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Semantic Network, Eleanor Rosch, Family Resemblance
Document Summary
Conceptual knowledge- knowledge that enables us to recognize objects and events and. Concept- mental representations: meaning of objects, events, abstract ideas, mental representation of a class or individual. Categorization- process by which things are placed into groups: groups concepts together, helps us understand specific cases that haven"t been encountered, pointers to knowledge . Definitional approach- determines category membership based on whether each object meets a definition: doesn"t work well except for with geometric objects. Family resemblance- things in a category resemble one another. Prototype approach- we have prototypes of categories, typical member, and we compare individuals to the prototype: rosch asked people to rate how good of a representation a category member is of a category (scale 1-7) Strong relationship between prototypicality and family resemblance. Typicality effect- high prototypical objects are processed more quickly. Prototypical objects are named first in a list. Prototypical objects are affected more by priming.
