Intro to dance as an art form reading summaries and class notes. O"shea analyses different sub disciplines in dance studies including: expert viewership, O"shea discusses how anthropology has an influence on choreographers around the world and that academic dance writings primarily came out of anthropology and folklore studies. She then goes on to explain that skilled viewership and dance writing have historically supported one another and have a close relationship. For second generation dance study authors, discussions of the politics and identity have developed such as moving outside the black/white polarity. O"shea also says that dance studies puts gendered sexualizes and racialized bodies into motion which enables further discussion about bodily inscription and agency. Aesthetics philosophy laid the groundwork for understanding dance from a philosophical perspective. History offers a tangible object for interpretation and produced an object by identifying its past.
