A network of formally sanctioned and durable arrangements and relationships among people in an organization. Who is responsible to whom. How workers are supposed to communicate. What functions to be performed. How they are grouped together. Divides up tasks (differentiation function) Reconnects tasks (integration function) Differentiation and integration function, plus their four associated dimensions. Specialization - degree to which activities are each performed by individuals with that function and no other. Recruiting is easier: people doing more specialized tasks. Training is easier: limit what people need to know. Individual operations easier: switching from one task to another. Greater individual quality: approaching expert level for each person. Serves predictability and stability for employees: know exactly what they are supposed to do. Monitoring difficult: specialists off doing their own thing. Duplication risk: too many people might be doing the same thing.
