PSY 350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Puberty
Document Summary
All species change through the process of natural selection. The development of civilizations began with the building of cities, and social development through specialized work and status development. This then began to develop political systems and government. All of this made possible by growing food, domestication of animals, and developing familial units. Survival methods are passed down generation to generation through language. Both natural selection and culture determines where and how we live. Freud focused on early childhood, and the effects of traumatic events on childhood development. Proposed that sexual desire is the driving force behind psychological development in young children. Freud"s theories are not widely respected by today"s standards, but still important to understanding how child psychology developed. Developed the binet-simon intelligence scale that separated children into different categories based on knowledge and ability to learn different skills. 4 test categories: general knowledge, reasoning, memory, and problem solving. Mandatory schooling and testing implemented: stanley hall: development past puberty.
