COM 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Intercultural Communication, Culture Shock, Meddle
Document Summary
Intercultural communication refers to communication that occurs in interactions between people who are culturally different. Culture is learned patters of perceptions, values, and behaviors shared by a group of people; culture is heterogeneous and operates within societal power structures. Intercultural communication expertise can also facilitate relations, which have increasingly involved conflict; these conflicts often call for sophisticated skills of intercultural communication and meditation. The final reason for studying intercultural communication is to increase self-awareness; people often learn more about themselves and their own cultural background and identities by coming into contact with people whose backgrounds differ from their own. Three ways people move around as border dwellers are through: travel, socialization, participation (through an intercultural relationship) Voluntary short term travelers: study abroad students, corporate personnel, missionaries and military people. Voluntary long term travelers: immigrants who settle in other locations, usually seeking what they perceive is a better life.
