Primary/essential muscles participate fully in respiration. Accessory muscles help facilitate respiration but are not necessarily essential. Do not need abdominal muscles for inhalation. Edges attach to the inferior portions of the ribs, sternum, and vertebral column. Middle portion made up of aponeurosis called the central tendon. Central tendon is crescent-shaped with no contractile properties of its own. Central tendon provides a floor for the heart, which sits directly above it.
