People vary in who they hang out with and the people you are around. Some people hang out with more deviant people than non-deviant people. Not primarily about learning how to commit crime. S"s theory is commonly referred to as cultural deviance theory. We learn deviant values from our culture or subculture. Gottfredson and hirschi would not agree with sutherland"s theory of differential association . This is because they state that criminal behavior comes naturally. They also would say that low self control would cause both hanging with deviant people and crime. The belief factor of self control would be low because they don"t have a strong connection to their own personal motives. Felson believes that there is an innocent youth fallacy connected to crime. The fallacy is that young people are innocent and become corrupted by others. Sutherland"s theory of differential association coincides with this fallacy because he believes that deviant or criminal behavior is learned, not inherited.
