PSYC 001 Lecture 2:
Document Summary
Central nervous system is made of two parts: brain and spinal cord (cannot heal) Peripheral nervous system is made of all other parts (peripheral nerves have the ability to heal: somatic nervous system, autonomic nervous system, sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system. Information flows from the dendrites to the soma, to the axon, to the terminal endings, to the next neuron (received by the dendrites of the next neuron) electrical current flows to convey information. Left temporal lobe has the most language processing (some functions are primarily handled on one side of the brain) broca"s area helps produce language: understanding of language is handled by the frontal lobe (wernicke"s area) If you pulled the two halves of the brain apart, you would see axons connecting the left and right side this is the corpus collosum. Example: split brain knows there is a word in front of them, but cannot verbalize what it is.
