Document Summary
Both about popular stereotypes of lgbt life in the rural u. s. and flight narrative; and about strategies rural queer youth use to organize and perform identity. Ethnographic method: narrative, participant observation + media studies. Critique of national lgbt organizing for not taking into account these experiences platform based on politics of visibility & assumption of gay migration & lack of attention to regional, class, racial specificity. Critique is aimed towards some stereotypes/ narratives between lgbt lives and rural us locations. One of her modes of working is ethnography = deep hanging out, spending time in kentucky, there are queer people living queer lives. On one hand, there"s a conservative homophobic position that says that this is small town america like gay people, but it"s also a narrative from the queer community itself. Absence in country/ rural location, but also challenging the familiar narrative of the flight to the city.
