Filtration and detoxification
Liver (P.727)
• Produces most of the proteins needed in the body
o Serum Albumin
▪ If this is low we get generalized edema.
o Bile: stored in the gallbladder
▪ Ejected into the duodenum
▪ Bile salts helps with emulsification of fats
o Prevents shortages of nutrients by storing minerals and sugars
▪ Glycogen. When the body is in need of glucose source glycogen is broken down
and released by liver
o Produces most of the substances that regulate clotting
▪ Produces proteins for the Clotting system
▪ Fibrinogen.
▪ Factor 8.
• When there is a problem we can expect
o Problems with hypoglycemia
o Edema due to lack of serum
o Problems digesting and absorbing fats
o Difficulty clotting. Bruise easily.
• Removes potentially toxic byproducts of certain medications
o Deamination of proteins that have broken down in body
o Acids become converted into ammonia
o By product of deamination
o Liver converts ammonia into urea
o If lier a’t oert aoia ito urea, eess aoia ill aualte i asular
space and people can get swelling in the brain
▪ Encephalopathy
▪ Neurotoxic
• Metabolizes or, breaks down nutrients from food when needed
o Gluconeogenesis: breaking down fatyy acids into glucose source
▪ Lipolysis. Liver converts these into energy source
• Helps fight infection by removing bacteria from blood
o Resident macrophages called Kuppfer Cells
• Hapatocites in liver
o Cells in liver
o Produce things as well detoxifying waste
o Where bile is made
▪ Channeled toward bile duct. Comes out of the duct and is sent to the gall
bladder-> duodenum. It is ultimately eliminated in yor stool. Makes poop brown
• Portal vein: draining venous blood from the digestive system.
o Deoxygenated venous blood
o Esophagus-> stomach -> small intestine -> large intestine

Document Summary
Liver (p. 727: produces most of the proteins needed in the body, serum albumin. If this is low we get generalized edema: bile: stored in the gallbladder, ejected into the duodenum, bile salts helps with emulsification of fats, prevents shortages of nutrients by storing minerals and sugars, glycogen. Bruise easily: removes potentially toxic byproducts of certain medications, deamination of proteins that have broken down in body, acids become converted into ammonia, by product of deamination, liver converts ammonia into urea. Comes out of the duct and is sent to the gall bladder-> duodenum. Blood is filtered through bringing vitamins glucose and oxygen. Filters into venous system eventually: portal triad: combination of, bile duct, portal vein, portal arteriole. Kidney: gets blood from the sv of the left ventricle, renal core pussel, pores in bowmans capsule. Act as strainer: rbcs, wbc, platelets, a(cid:374)d al(cid:271)u(cid:373)i(cid:374) do(cid:374)"t go i(cid:374)to filtrate.
