NURS 461 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Gestational Age, Facial Symmetry, Cephalohematoma
Document Summary
Gestational age: may or may not support estimated gestational age from estimated date of conception. Difficulty with delivery, obvious abnormalities, difficulty with spontaneous breathing, trauma from labor/delivery, lack of movement in extremities, lack of facial symmetry, spina bifida, meningocele, fontanelles, etc. As needed during hospitalization if anything abnormal or of concern. Uses information about length, weight, head circumference to determine: Sga (small for gestational age): babies whose assessment parameters of birth weight, length, & head circumference are < average for their gestational age. Aga (appropriate for gestational age): babies who parameters are appropriate for gestational age. Lga (large for gestational age): those whose parameters are > average for gestational age. Also includes work of dubowitz/ballard & others to determine gestational age based on: neuromuscularity maturity: posture, arm recoil, etc. can be scored in each area from -1 to 5. Square window: look at baby wrist flexibility. Arm recoil: when pull arm down, what response does baby have.
